ATVs vs. UTVs
If you are looking to buy an off-road vehicle, your first step is deciding between an ATV and a UTV. Both of these vehicle styles are excellent forms of transportation on the worksite and they are also great for recreational purposes. However, both ATVs and UTVs come with unique benefits as they’re each suited to specific purposes. If you’re not sure which one to buy, you will probably benefit from this guide by The Sports Center.
We’ve provided the top features of both UTVs and ATVs to help you determine which one will best suit your needs. When you’re ready to check out the latest models, get in touch with us at our dealership in Perry, Georgia.
Features of ATVs
ATVs are the smaller and faster style of the two vehicles, with a sit-through or straddle style of seating. Usually, ATVs have space for only the person operating the vehicle, but a few quads have an extra seat so that another rider can hold on to the operator, similar to a passenger on a motorcycle.
These four-wheelers can usually go faster and fit through tighter spaces than a UTV can, owing to their smaller footprint and more compact design. They are generally used for recreational purposes, such as off-roading over rough terrain or racing on tracks, but some ATVs are equipped to tow heavy loads when they have tow bars or winches attached. You’ll find that most ATVs are cheaper than UTVs owing to their smaller size, which can be a benefit if you don’t require transport for multiple people.
Features of UTVs
Utility terrain vehicles have space for more than one rider on bench-style seating, leading to their other name: side-by-side. UTVs can have one or two rows of seating and generally have seatbelts to protect riders. They are larger and wider than ATVs, driving more like a car than an ATV does, and they generally have rollover cages to protect the rider from being trapped under the vehicle if it does rollover. The risk of rollover is lessened on a UTV, though, as they aren’t as fast or nimble as ATVs.
Some UTVs have windshields and even roofs and windows, making them more enclosed and better for riding in inclement weather. UTVs are perfect for transporting workers and their gear over fields and construction sites, so they are great for crews. Side-by-sides offer increased cargo and towing capacities over ATVs and they can be used to haul heavy loads, including trailers and machines, which a quad can’t handle. They are also great for taking families or friends on recreational drives, although they are not capable of the extreme riding that ATVs are.
